Do you know about The Lace Reader?

If you don’t, you will soon.

The Lace Reader

The Lace Reader was a debut novel independently published last summer by its author, Salem resident Brunonia Barry. Less than two months after its release, there ensued a fevered auction which resulted in HarperCollins Publishers offering Barry a seven-figure world English rights deal, an unprecedented event for an independently published book. All unsold copies of her original novel were pulled from shelves, and we of the literary world, who loved this novel, waited with bated breath for word of the hardcover release.

The wait is over! The Lace Reader debuts nationally on Tuesday, July 29!

Set in Salem in the 1990s, The Lace Reader centers around the story of Towner, a deeply troubled young woman fifteen years into a self-imposed exile in California. The novel opens with a phone call to Towner telling her that her beloved Great Aunt Eva has disappeared. Since Towner’s stalwart mother won’t leave her island shelter, it becomes necessary for Towner to return to Salem and handle this. But Towner is a fractured soul, having just been released from the hospital after major surgery and in clear need of psychological (as well as physical) therapy, and to have to return to Salem after having left it under troublesome circumstances years before is almost unbearable for her. From here, the story moves quickly as Towner is reluctantly drawn into finding out what has happened to Eva and, ultimately, what happened to Towner and her family so many years ago.

Deftly weaving together bits of local history and lore, The Lace Reader spins the compelling, haunting story of a young woman equally desperate to outrun and to face her troubled past. With a fantastic cast of characters and an unforgettable ending, The Lace Reader is sure to make a huge impact well beyond the stretches of our North Shore.
